Fresh Off the Lake: What Salmon Fishing Taught Me About Finding the Right Audience

Fresh Off the Lake: What Salmon Fishing Taught Me About Finding the Right Audience

After a long day on the fishing boat with my angler team on East Grand Lake, I found myself reflecting on more than just the day’s catch. We spent all morning and into the afternoon searching for salmon, hearing the promising beep of the fish finder but had no luck. It wasn’t until we changed our approach—trying a new location, different lures, and adding weights to the line—that everything shifted. That strategy worked: I caught my first of the day - 18-inch, 2.5-pound salmon. It put up a fight, but I reeled it in. After that, our luck completely changed. We went on to catch 11 more fish of varying sizes, including an unexpected brook trout.

That moment of success wasn’t just about luck, it was about persistence, the right tools, and knowing where to be at the right time. And it reminded me a lot of what we face in marketing: the challenge of finding and connecting with the right audience

You Can’t Just Cast Anywhere and Hope for the Best

East Grand Lake spans thousands of acres. There are plenty of places you could fish, but only a few where the fish are actually biting. If we had just thrown our lines in without understanding the depth, temperature, and structure of the lake, we might have gone home empty-handed.

The same holds true in marketing. A campaign that isn’t rooted in audience insight is just noise. You need to understand who your audience is, where they spend time, and what motivates them before you ever “cast” your message. Otherwise, you’re just hoping someone happens to swim by.

The Gear Has to Match the Fish

We brought specific lures designed for salmon, not perch or bass. Without the right equipment, even if we found them, we wouldn’t have landed a thing.

In marketing, your “gear” is your data stack. Identity resolution, onboarding, cross-device targeting, real-time analytics—they’re not just nice to have. They’re necessary if you want to connect meaningfully and consistently with your ideal customer.

Patience, Precision, and Persistence Pay Off

We didn’t catch anything for five hours. But we didn’t give up. We adjusted our location. Paid attention to what the sonar was telling us. Changed our lures and added weights to the line. And eventually, it paid off.

Reaching the right audience often takes the same mix of strategy and stamina. Campaigns rarely perform perfectly out of the gate. You test, optimize, listen to the data, and refine. Those who stick with it, and adapt, are the ones who win.

Not Every Tug Is Worth Reeling In

We felt plenty of tugs before catching that salmon. Some were weeds. Some were smaller fish. Not every nibble was worth the fight.

In marketing, volume doesn’t equal value. It’s not about more impressions, it’s about the right ones. Without the ability to qualify and segment your audience, you risk spending time and budget on leads that won’t go anywhere.

Success Comes from Knowing the Lake and Trusting Your Tools

When we finally caught that salmon, it wasn’t by accident. It came from reading the signs, trusting our setup, and sticking with the plan. That’s what smart marketing is too; knowing your audience landscape and using the right tools to navigate it.
